AmeriCorps

 

AmeriCorps strengthens communities by empowering youth to foster critical thinking, initiate dialogue within a community, recognize avenues of social and economic relief, find a moral center amid the forces of change and diversity, help furnish the stands and values by which communities can make judgments and instill a sense of pride necessary in building a future.  Sanctuary provides an intense training to members in youth, adult, family and community development and group facilitation.

A total of 42 AmeriCorps members this year provide supportive counseling group, services and after school activities to island youth and their families. 

These members do any of the following:

Mentoring

Tutoring

Co-Facilitate numerous supportive counseling groups

Help with after school activities in Northern part of Guam

Residential Services in Central part of Guam

 

AmeriCorps members receive numerous trainings and workshops throughout the year.  This includes the induction ceremony of the year, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, National Volunteer Week, Senior Citizen Month, Mid-Year Retreat, Liberation Day Parade, Make a Difference Day and AmeriCorps graduation to lose out the year. Members are also involved in activities such as Youth Policy Day, Micronesian Youth Services Network conference, Too Cool For Drugs conference, Sanctuary Month and First Lady events.

 

An Americorps member is able to serve two consecutive years as members before bidding farewell to Sanctuary. If interested in joining please contact George L. Salas at 475.7101.
