Transitional Living Program (TLP)
Sanctuary's Transitional Living Program (TLP) is an 18-month program for youth between the ages of 16 and 21 and is the only community-based program on Guam and in the region that provides services to older homeless youth who have no suitable alternative placement available to them. TLP will assist them to successfully transition to independence and self-sufficiency by providing shelter, life skills training and services such as supportive counseling and individualized Personal Plan for each resident. The overall goal of the project is to help these youth achieve independence and self-sufficiency to prevent long-term dependency on social services. In FY07, TLP had a total of eight residents in shelter. These residents came through our doors from various circumstances. The most apparent trend in these residents was un-resolvable family issues which prevented them from returning home and being reunited with their families. Other factors leading to placement included having no alternative available other than DYA. This was due to homelessness and not being able to return home due to the living conditions of the home from which they came. Even with these challenges before them, TLP residents were able to accomplish some of their long-term goals and make great steps towards independence and self-sufficiency.
Some highlights from FY07 are: 2 residents graduated from high school and moved on to higher graduation, 1 at Guam Community College and 1 at University of Guam. 2 residents received their learner's permits and are on their way to getting their driver's license. 4 residents participated in AHRD's Passport to Careers Program where they were able to secure summer employment and an invaluable opportunity to learn about possible careers. 1 resident was given the opportunity to participate in the Soap Box Derby where an adult mentor was able to help said resident build and operate a soap box car. 1 resident graduation from Juvenile Drug Court and made renewed commitment to living drug free. |
