Youth Supportive Groups:

 

Tuesdays

Anger Management [4:30 pm - 5:30 pm, Sanctuary main facility], 11-17 years old:

This group educates participants on the effects of anger and how to use it appropriately. The 10 week sessions enable youth to use new skills to help control anger issues at home, school and with peers. Topics include dealing with rage and hostility towards other people, controlling techniques to manage anger effectively and coping mechanisms allowing youth to resolve problems.This group is available to youth within the central and southern part of Guam.

 

Alateen [6:00 pm – 7:00pm, Sanctuary main facility], 12-21 years old,
(on a case by case basis if youth is over 18 years old and under the jurisdiction of the court):
 
Alcoholism and addiction affects many. Oftentimes, the children of users and abusers are left with little resources to deal with the effects of their parents’ addictions. Alateen is a place where the children of addicts and alcoholics meet and empower one another. There are no fees for Alateen membership.

 

Wednesdays

Self-Esteem [4:30 pm - 5:30 pm, Sanctuary main facility], 11-18 years old:

This group addresses youth's self-concept and feeling of self worth. The focus of the group is to increase the group member/s value of self. The facilitator encourages open communication and active participation in the weekly groups.

 

Tobacco Cessation [4:30 pm - 5:30 pm, Sanctuary main facility], 11-18 years old:

This group utilizes the MN Smoking Program as a guide to discourage tobacco use among adolescents. The curriculum is designed to influence the social and psychological factors that encourage the onset of smoking cigarettes or using smokeless tobacco. In addition to tobacco use, the facilitator also encourages members to deal with peer pressure and make appropriate decisions to abstain from alcohol and drug use.

 

 

THURSDAYS

Na' Homlo [4:30 pm - 5:30 pm, Sanctuary main facility], 12-18 years old:

Na' Homlo (healing or "to heal" in Chamorro) group facilitators discuss the negative effects and consequences of using drugs and/or alcohol. The facilitatos focus on getting group participants to understand how often, with whom and why they utilize these substances. In addition, they process with the young people and impress upon them the personal consequences of their drug and alcohol use.

 

Pathways [4:30 pm - 5:30 pm, Sanctuary main facility], 11-24 years old:

Pathways is a more intensive support group for youth who have deeper issues concerning drugs and/or alcohol use or abuse. In this group, facilitator's help participants gain a better understanding of why it is they engage in utilizing these destrutive substances. Staff focuses on on having young people recognize there are consequences for each decision they make. The group is not just about alochol and drug use, but about all the desicions they make in their life and how these decisions result in consequence - whether it is negative or positive depends on the decision.
*Attendance in this particular group is by referral only and based on an assessment conducted by program staff.

Anger Management [4:30 pm - 5:30 pm, Astumbo Senior Citizen Center], 11-17 years old:

This group educates participants on the effects of anger and how to use it appropriately. The 10 week sessions enable youth to use new skills to help control anger issues at home, school and with peers. Topics include dealing with rage and hostility towards other people, controlling techniques to manage anger effectively and coping mechanisms allowing youth to resolve problems.This group is available to youth within the northern part of Guam.

Narcotics Anonymous (NA) [6:30 pm – 7:30 pm, Sanctuary main facility], 12-21 years old,
(on a case by case basis if youth is over 18 years old and under the jurisdiction of the court):

Narcotics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women for whom drugs has become a major problem. It consists of recovering addicts who meet regularly to help each other stay clean. This is a program of complete abstinence from all drugs. The program is a set of principles written so simply that it can be followed in daily lives. The program N.A. suggests consists of “Twelve Steps” designed for personal recovery from drugs. There are no fees for NA membership.


FRIDAYS
Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) [6:00 pm – 7:00 pm, Sanctuary main facility], 12-21 years old,
(on a case by case basis if youth is over 18 years old and under the jurisdiction of the court):

Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. AA is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organization or institution; does not wish to engage in any controversy, neither endorses nor opposes any causes. Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety. The program AA suggests consists basically of “Twelve Steps” designed for personal recovery from alcoholism. People who think they have a drinking problem are welcome to attend any AA meeting. However, Sanctuary, Incorporated hosts AA meetings specifically for teens. There are no fees for AA membership.
